Pioneering sci-fi authors have produced great novels just from the concept of first contact. As creatures with infinite possibilities for physical appearance and behavior, aliens provide a great opportunity for students’ imagination to take flight. What do they look like? What’s their agenda? How does humanity react? Are they friendly or hostile? This encourages broad thinking and a step toward understanding the universality of emotions regardless of beings.
